Erosive Tooth Wear Awareness

Updated: Jul 30, 2020

Since erosive tooth wear has taken the back seat, few people feel the need to treat erosive tooth wear. Studies have shown people even misinterpret the early stages of erosive tooth wear as it can deceptively appear more cosmetic at first.  The early stage has enamel surface texture changes which appear more polished leading to higher cosmetic ratings.  Sound and healthy enamel structure will not appear as shiny or polished and does not expose the underlying dentin.  Therefore detection is lower and it may be until the erosion is greater in size or leads to symptoms the patient may seek treatment.

Greater patient awareness such as education and cooperating with dental providers should improve detection of erosive tooth wear.
